Shillong: The Air Force has taken up a plan for development of infrastructure in the Northeast region, it is understood from a Defence Press release issued in Shillong on Thursday on the occasion of the visit of chief of air staff Arup Raha in Shillong.
The release said that Air Chief Marshal Raha, addressing a conference of air commanders under the Eastern Air Command, gave to the officers “an insight into future infrastructure development plans under EAC.”
The Air Chief asked air force personnel to keep abreast of modern developments and technologies for smooth transition to and better absorption of modern equipment. He also talked about the security scenario of the northeastern region.
It may be mentioned that the air force has introduced in the northeastern region top-of-the-line fighter aircraft like Sukhoi-30MKI and heavy duty transport aircraft like C-130J Super Hercules in view of the proximity of the region to the India – China border and the Chinese investments in the Tibet region in arms and infrastructure.
Unmanned aerial vehicles have also been introduced to keep surveillance on the border. According to experts, these would require upgradation of airfields and setting up of advance landing grounds.
The air chief is on a two-day visit to Shillong, accompanied by his wife Lily Raha, president of Air Force Wives Welfare Association.
