SHILLONG: The model code of conduct will continue to be effective in Meghalaya till the completion of poll exercise in allover the country.

After the last phase of elections on May 12, the counting will take place on May 16.

The Chief Electoral Officer P Naik told reporters on Thursday that the model code of country is effective in all the states including those where poll process has been completed.

Voters’ apathy : Naik cited various reasons for the lukewarm response to the publicity campaign initiated by the election department to woo the voters.

Naik said that ultimately, to cast the votes or not depends on people’s free will and no one can be forced.

While the weather condition especially the rain in Sohra was another reason for the less turn out in that constituency , HNLC bandh has also affected the turnout to some extent in Khasi Hills, he said.
