SHILLONG: The motivational increase in polling percentage in 2-Tura Parliamentary Constituency covering all the five districts has come as positive news from a place featured otherwise for all the wrong reasons.
Tura District Election Officer Pravin Bakshi expressed happiness on the fact that the people of Garo Hills braved threats of militancy, elephant attack and a cyclone that affected parts of West Garo Hills and South West Garo HIlls only to come out and vote fearlessly and assertively.
The increase in percentage from the last General Elections to the Lok Sabha in 2009 to this year’s elections for Lok Sabha 2014 for the entire Tura Parliamentary Constituency is a robust 10.47 percent.
While all districts have shown a smart increase in voting – it is gratifying to see that for the 11 Assembly segments under West Garo Hills the increase is the sharpest at 14.89 % followed by North Garo Hills at 11.62 % and South West Garo Hills at 11.03 %.
Even South Garo Hills and East Garo Hills which have faced the major brunt of violence it is a positive increase of 9.46 % and 9.32 % respectively which is encouraging.
Even in urban assembly segments where the voting is low due to many factors including urban apathy and students studying and people working outside, it is an 11.46 % increase for voters of North Tura and 6.52 % increase from last Lok Sabha elections for voters of South Tura.
