GUWAHATI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has slapped a show cause notice to All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president and a candidate from Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency in Assam, Badruddin Ajmal for making objectionable comment on March 22 last in violation of model poll code of conduct, according to an ECI communiqué.
Ajmal is the sitting MP from Dhubri constituency in western Assam. The Election Commission has asked Ajmal to reply to the show cause notice by 11.30 A.M. on April 14 next failing which action will be taken against him as per the law provisions related to conduct of poll.
It was the Assam state unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against Ajmal for making communal remarks against the BJP.
Ajmal on March 22 last stated that “Allah (God) will not forgive the AIUDF if the BJP manages to win even a single seat in Assam because of AIUDF’s selection of poll candidates. BJP is our number one enemy and we will do whatever is required to defeat the BJP. We are ready even to join hands with Congress for the purpose.”
In reaction the BJP stated that Ajmal posed grave danger to the communal harmony in the state during the election and the Election Commission should take note of his communal remarks made in public in relation to polls.
The BJP had demanded that the Ajmal should be put under house arrest by the Election Commission for trying to whip up communal passion in the run up to Lok Sabha polls in Assam so that he could no longer fan communal passion in the state during election.
