SHILLONG: Shillong College has entered into a partnership with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) to impart higher education to the less privileged students who do not have access to the conventional system of education.
IGNOU has chosen Shillong College to run the new regular study centre of the university after the closure of its previous study centre at Sanker Dev College.
“The university is proud to enter into a partnership with a premier institution like the Shillong College. I am happy that the college has agreed to accept our proposal to run this study centre,” IGNOU Regional Director Dr Joseph Somi said during the inaugural function of the new study centre at the conference hall of the college on Friday.
Dr Somi pointed out that there are large sections of youth who are unable to pursue their higher studies since they do not have any access to conventional education.
“The opening of this centre will provide an opportunity to many such youths to have an access to higher education,” IGNOU regional director said.
He informed that the university has enrolled 3.8 million students and in Meghalaya, there are 8252 students who have taken admission in various courses offered by the university.
Dr Somi said that the courses which would be imparted at the study centre in Shillong College are BSC, MA (Sociology) and MCom. Speaking on the occasion, Shillong College principal KD Ramsiej hoped that the study centre would be a successful one.
