SHILLONG: A group of women who tried to attend the Dorbar were not denied the opportunity to attend the meeting and were also not given items under PDS.
It has been reported that the Sordar of the village, Kwit Kyrsian and the secretary Faithstar Nongtri on Thursday, prevented the women of the village to attend the meeting which was convened to discuss this matter.
Sources on Friday informed that both the Sordar and secretary chased the women who came to attend the meeting.
Meanwhile, the CSWO on Friday submitted a petition to the KHADC CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit about the illegal action taken on the part of the Dorbar. A copy of the petition was also submitted to the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Sanjay Goyal.
“We have come to learn that in the Dorbar, the Sordar and secretary decided to not disburse anymore PDS to the women folk. Not only this, the women were also prevented from taking part in the discussion on the matter. This is a direct violation of their right to food and their right to expression,” CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said.
She also urged upon the KHADC CEM to take immediate action by bringing a law to resolve the matter so that women will also get a fair chance to participate in the Dorbar Discussions.
“This will help to bring rational decisions benefitting the society as a whole. We would also like to see the immediate removal of the Sordar and secretary who are not giving justice to the women of the society,” Kharshiing said.
FIR lodged
In a separate FIR lodged with the officer-in-charge of Sohiong outpost, the CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said that Ortila Nongrum of Kynroh Nonglyer from East Khasi Hills district, has been denied her quota of rice, for January this year by the dealer Basil Kharthangmaw, who said that he was stopped from giving her and her orphaned grandchildren their quota of rice as the Sordar of KynrohNonglyer, KwitKyrsien, and the Secretary of the Dorbar of Kynroh Nonglyer had cautioned him not to do so.
When Basil called up the Sordar on January 31 to inform him that he will give the quota of rice to Ortila, the Sordar stopped him from giving the rice.
The woman who is poor has to take care of the two minor children of her deceased daughter, and with the benefit of Antyodaya Anna Yojna Scheme (AAY) which helps the poor, she can sustain herself to her right to food along with her grandchildren.
It was also revealed that the AAY beneficiaries and the BPL beneficiaries had to pay Rs 8 to Rs 9 per kg all these years.
This is against the laid down rates of the Government.
The CSWO has asked the police to arrest the Sordar of KynrohNonglyer, KwitKyrsien, the Secretary of the Dorbar of KynrohNonglyer and the Dealer Basil Kharthangmaw as per the Essential Commodities Act and also for extortion from the poor of the village who had to pay extra beyond the laid down price, for their quota of rice.
