TTC signed cheques even during MBoSe assignment

SHILLONG: In a new twist to the missing files case related to Syndai park project, it has come to light that the principal chief conservator of forests TTC Marak continued to issue cheques for the implementation of the project while he was on deputation to MBoSE.

Recently Marak said that he had nothing to do with the project and the missing files as “I was sent on deputation to MBoSE as Executive Chairman from September 2005 till February, 2009 when the works were supposed to have been done at the park”.

Marak had also said that the construction of various components of the works of Syndai park was done by the staff of the Forest and Environment Department.

However, an official source said that as per records with the Forest Department, Marak had issued cheques for the project when he was still holding the charge of MBoSE chairman.

“How could Marak still operate bank accounts when he was already sent on deputation to MBoSE,” the official familiar with the case said.

According to the official, another anomaly which has come to light is that Marak deposited the money meant for the Syndai park project in his personal account and subsequently he re-funded the unspent amount.

The Forest Depart is yet to get back the files though an FIR was lodged last month regarding the missing files related to the project.

It was the Deputy Secretary to the Forest & Environment Department A. Nikhla who had lodged a complaint at Sadar Police Station that two files bearing No. FOR.76/2006, relating to the alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Border Area Development Programme went missing from the Forest and Environment Department, Secretariat Building, Shillong, between 2006 and March 19, 2014.
