HC acquits man convicted of wife’s murder on weak evidence

Mumbai: Finding discrepancies in the dying declarations given by a housewife to her father, police and doctor, the Bombay High Court has quashed and set aside the life sentence imposed on her husband for setting her ablaze as a result of which she eventually died in hospital. In separate dying declarations given by Vijaya Shelar to her father and police, she had stated that her husband Machindra suspected her character and thus on March 24, 2004, he and his aunt had poured kerosene on her and set her afire.However, in another dying declaration to a doctor who had treated her burn injuries sustained in the incident, Vijaya had stated that she was set afire by her husband. In this statement, Vijaya had not mentioned about her husband’s aunt also being involved in setting her on fire. (PTI)

 

AAP candidate in Nalanda attacked

Patna: The AAP on Monday demanded the transfer of the superintendent of police in Bihar’s Nalanda district after its candidate, Pranav Prakash, was attacked and injured by unidentified men. Prakash was assaulted Sunday evening in Utarthu village when he was on his way to the Aam Aadmi Party’s election office. “Pranav Prakash was badly beaten and injured and admitted to a hospital for treatment,” said the AAP convenor for Bihar, Somnath Tripathy. He blamed the Janata Dal-United for the attack. (IANS)

 

Eight injured in LPG blast

Gurgaon: At least eight people, including a woman and an infant, were injured when a cooking gas cylinder burst in their rented room, police said on Monday. Uday Mahto, 26, his wife Reena and two-year-old daughter were critically injured when the leaking gas cylinder in their room caught fire and burst. “The incident happened late Sunday night in Heera Nagar area. They were referred to the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi,” said a senior doctor at the Civil Hospital here. (IANS)

 

Art auction raises Rs 5 crore for charity

New Delhi: The late M.F. Husain’s “Mother Teresa” painting was sold for Rs.1.6 crore at a charity art auction that raised Rs.5 crore from the event here, said organisers on Monday. The Delhi Art Gallery in association with Khushii Foundation, an NGO, organised a fund-raising art auction “Smiles” Sunday, where they were able to sell 40 lots. Indian contemporary artist Akbar Padamsee’s “Untitled” fetched Rs.35 lakh and Kolkata-based Bikash Bhattacharjee’s “Untitled” too was sold for Rs.35 lakh.IANS)
