Death of two Garo youths
MAWKYRWAT: The District Administration along with the village heads on Monday organized a joint peace meeting at Borsohra, South West Khasi Hills, to ease the tension which arose due to the death of two Garo youths on April 3.
On April 3, two Garo youths lost their lives after they fell down to a gorge while they were chased by a mob for demanding money from one Sardar of the coal quarry at Nongkulang village near Borsohra.
Police officials informed that the incident took place at around 8:30 pm when some boys went to one of the coal quarries at Nongkulang village to collect money that they had demanded earlier, but the Sardar refused to pay the amount.
“On refusal to pay the money, the youths threatened him. The Sardar cried for help and the people who were nearby came in large numbers. After the youths ran away, several people chased them. While running in the dark, the youths fell down to the deep gorge resulting in the death of one of them on the spot while the other succumbed to his injuries at Ranikor CHC,” a police official said.
The death of these youths resulted in tension the area which was inhabited by different communities as they suspected each other of trying to harm them.
“To ease the tension in the area, we have conducted a joint peace meeting at Bagli, Borsohra, which was attended by the district SP, magistrate, village leaders and the people from different communities who live in the area,” the official said, adding that in the meeting, the police and magistrate present urged the people not to take the law into their own hands and they should cooperate with the police”, the official added.
