Guwahati: Defying ULFA’s diktat against performing Hindi songs at Bihu functions, popular singer Zubeen Garg has once again gone ahead with singing his own popular Hindi film tracks at functions.

While the outfit is yet to react to his move, unruly scenes dominated a Bihu function pandal as organizers prevented Zubeen from singing Hindi songs even as the audience and the singer remained adamant, leading police to lathi-charge to control the situation.

Performing before a packed audience at a Bihu function in the city, Zubeen started signing one of his popular Hindi tracks, after performing a few Assamese numbers, eliciting loud applause from the audience.

However, the function organizers stormed to the stage and forced the singer to stop midway.

A peeved Zubeen left the function without completing his performance, leading to angry outbursts from the audience and confrontation between the audience and organisers.

Police had to resort to mild lathi-charge to control the situation.

Zubeen had last year also defied a similar diktat by the hardliner ULFA against performing Hindi songs at Bihu functions, leading to a threat on life of the ace singer-music composer.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had backed Zubeen’s defiance and extra security cover was provided to him. The ULFA has this year too asked artists and organisers not to allow Hindi songs on Bihu stages, claiming it was an ‘invasion’ by ‘outside culture’. (UNI)
