SHILLONG: A group of young educated students concerned about the growing degradation of the environment have recently formed the Meghalaya Eco-Friendly Student Union (MEFSU) to ensure a clean and green Meghalaya.
“We are really pained to see the way our environment is being massacred due to various unwanted human activities. We have formed this union to do our bit for the protection of the environment,” MEFSU president Rangdajied Marwein while taking to newsmen said here on Wednesday.
He however said that the effort of the union to protect the environment would not reach anywhere unless they have the support and cooperation of the general public at large.
“We are looking forward to enter into a partnership with the common people at the grass root level in our efforts to protect the environment. We also realised that the Government will not take the efforts of the union seriously unless they have mass support,” Marwein said.
The MEFSU president informed that they took up a very difficult task which was bound to take a long time to yield any positive result.
“But this will not be a deterrent in translating our dream of transforming Meghalaya into a clean and green State,” he said while also indicating that they are going to  every nook and corner of the State to create an awareness among the people on the need to implement the environment.
The MEFSU president highlighted that air pollution, water pollution, climate change etc was happening right in front everyone’s eyes but sadly people have turned turn a blind eye to these problems.
He however said that it is time for people to say no to plastic bags considering the deleterious impact it has on the environment. While expressing concern that people continue to litter, he remarked that it was sad that people continue such filthy practices despite claiming to be educated.
The MEFSU president also said that they were surprise to see the State Government failing to comply with the Supreme Court directive to ban smoking in public places.
