State Govt sends talks invite

SHILLONG: The 13 pro-ILP pressure groups have been invited to a dialogue on April 29 by the Meghalaya Government to deliberate on the mechanism to tackle the issue of influx and inflow of illegal immigrants.

“The official communiqué inviting the pro-ILP pressure was issued on Thursday. But the majority of the pressure groups would be receiving the invitation on Monday only,” a senior government official informed in Shillong on Thursday.

Earlier, too, the pro-ILP pressure groups had expressed their disappointment that the Government had not responded to their letter to call a meeting to discuss the issue of influx.

“It has been two weeks since we had sent the letter. But till now the Government is yet to respond, which is really sad,” KSU general Auguester Jyrwa said.

The KSU general secretary said that the second round of meeting was a critical one for both the pressure groups and the Government.

“We are going to submit our charter of demands during this meeting to the Government,” Jyrwa said.

The pro-ILP NGOs indicated that they would reiterate in their charter of demands to the State Government the need for introduction of ILP.

“The charter of demands to be submitted would cater specifically on the steps which could be adopted to further strengthen and improved the existing Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873,” Nongrum informed.

He said that they were preparing their charter of demands after studying the 52 existing laws which was provided by the Government.

When asked to elaborate on the important points which they would incorporate in their charter of demands, the KSU leader said that he would not to divulge anything since it was still in the drafting stage.

“We would spell out once we are fully complete with preparation of our charter of demands,” he said.
