SHILLONG: The KSU on Thursday backed the hike in power tariff recommended by the Meghalaya State Regulatory Commission (MSERC) terming it a ‘reasonable one’.
The pressure group, however, made clear its reservation on such hikes every year which would affect the ‘poor consumers’.
“The Union will soon meet the Commission to dwell on the matter. We will also study the current power hike,” KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said.
The MSERC has hiked power tariff in the State by 13 per cent to be effective from April 1, 2014.
Earlier, the KSU had demanded that the Government should keep the proposal to increase the power tariff in abeyance.
According to Jyrwa, the Union had submitted a representation to the government after the MeECL proposed to increase the power tariff from the existing Rs. 35 per unit to Rs. 210 per unit, a proposed hike of 500 per cent.
Notably, there was a seven per cent hike in power tariff during 2013-14.
