Male: Churchill Brothers beat Maldivian outfit New Radiant 2-1 on Wednesday here in their final Group E fixture of the AFC Cup. The Red Machines qualified for the round of 16 stage of the AFC Cup with this victory.

Fasir put New Radiant ahead in the 40th minute before Naveen Kumar and Anthony Wolfe got on the scoresheet in the second half to secure the win.

Five minutes before the break New Radiant broke the deadlock. Umair put the Maldives side ahead from a well taken free-kick.

Churchill’s Sanjay Balmuchu was sent off for a foul inside the box after the restart, but Umair kicked the penalty over the bar.

Moments later, New Radiant’s Quartey was given his marching orders after an altercation with Wolfe.

Churchill then made their hosts pay for their missed opportunities as they rallied to grab an equaliser in the 64th minute. Naveen Kumar found the back of the net with a header and three minutes later Wolfe smashed the ball past the goalkeeper, putting the Red Machines 2-1 ahead.

The Goans finished in second spot in the group and join Persipura Jayapura in the next round. (Agencies)
