Arunachal poll official’s family refuses to accept ex-gratia

Itanagar: Family of Mathew Dabi, who died while on polling duty during the April 9 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in East Siang district, refused to accept an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh granted by the Election Commission as an immediate relief. Bater Lollen Dabi, wife of the deceased refused to acceptthe ex-gratia payment on Friday on the ground that there was no conclusion to the case yet, family sources informed in a statement on Saturday. The relief money would only be accepted after the final closure of the case and those responsible for Dabi’s death were arrested and punished, it said. Dabi’s family also condemned the statement made by East Siang SP claiming that there were no major, external or stab-injuries on the body of the deceased. They also questioned the police report which stated that Dabi was under the influence of alcohol when he was discharging poll duty on April 9. Assistant teacher Mathew went missing from Siine village under Pangin Assembly constituency on April 9 last where he was deputed as polling official. Police recovered his body from a deep gorge near Siine village on April 17, eight days after he went missing. (PTI)

Nagaland Veterinary Council observes ‘World Veterinary Day’

Kohima: The Nagaland State Veterinary Council (NSVC) on Saturday observed ‘World Veterinary Day’ in a simple but impressive function at Kohima here. Speaking on the occasion, Dr M Timothy Lotha, Member, NSVC said that privilege and responsibilities are just the two side of the coin and therefore called upon the faculties to look back and focus what they should do and take care of world through livestock and animal production. Their also responsible as doctors and work with dignity to fulfill the obligation of the need of the people and Government, he added. He also said that we should create job avenue’s to the young generation who will be following with the department in the future. Dr K David Sema, NSVC president Dr K David Sema ask the doctors to redefine themselves and give proper service to the people. Dr Simon Ao, NSVC vice-president said that doctors need to retrospect and refresh the role of veterinarian towards their service to animals. (UNI)

Need to upgrade university curriculum: UPSC chief

Itanagar: The curriculum of universities in the country needs to be updated regularly, UPSC Chairman D P Agrawal on Saturday said, noting that they have not been revised for more than a decade. Pointing out that the curriculum in many universities have not been revised in a decade or two, Agrawal said these should be fine tuned with the changing times. He said this during an interaction here with eminent intellectuals, educationists and senior citizens. Agrawal advocated “vocationalisation” of the education system to enhance skills of individuals to enable them earn their livelihood, an official quoting him said. Agrawal asked authorities in Arunachal Pradesh to ensure optimum utilisation of resources to provide quality education. He expressed concern that “pro-active role is missing” in the North East Regional Institute of Science and Technology and Rajiv Gandhi University in the state. “Imparting quality education is the biggest challenge before us today. We must focus and stress on nurturing and developing future faculties for a better Arunachal and India,” he said. (PTI)

Nagaland observes World Malaria Day

Kohima: The Development Association of Nagaland (DAN) in collaboration with Caritas India and National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), Government of India conducted ‘Seminar-cum-Drawing Competition on Malaria’ for School children in commemoration of ‘world malaria day 2014’ on the theme ‘Invest in the future, Defeat Malaria’ on Friday at the coming generation conference hall, Kohima. According to official sources on Saturday the programme was attended by 70 students and 9 teachers representing 12 high and higher secondary schools under Kohima Town. Field Supervisor Kohima District IMCP-II DAN and Ng. Phuba James, District Project Officer, IMCP II spoke on the significant of the day. The main speaker of the programme senior entomologist NVBDCP Nagaland Atu Longkumar educated the participants on the causes of Malaria, sign and symptoms and the different preventive and control measures. He also challenged the participants to do their bit in reducing morbidity and mortality of Malaria. Drawing competition on three topics was organized on invest in the future, defeat malaria, early diagnosis and treatment and prevention and control of malaria wherein 50 students participated in the competition.
