SHILLONG: Director General (Prison) Prem Singh assured that the construction of the Nongstoin district jail would be completed at the earliest.
Singh made this assurance after his inspection to assess the progress of the construction work of the jail at Phodkynthei, Nongstoin on Friday last.
“The department will ensure that the jail is completed at the earliest and within the estimated revised budget,” the DG (Prison) said.
Meanwhile, he said that the purpose of his visit was to ensure that ongoing work was carried out properly and expeditiously.
As per the original deadline, the construction started in 2005 and it was scheduled to be completed in five years time.
It may be mentioned that the Government had earmarked a total amount of Rs 6.25 crore in December 20, 2003 for the construction of Nongstoin district jail at the 10.35 acres of land.
Many NGOs of the West Khasi Hills in the past few years have submitted their memorandum demanding the government to complete construction works within the scheduled deadline. The delay in the completion of the Nongstoin district jail led to overcrowding of the Shillong District Jail as under trial prisoners (UTPs) as well as convicts from West Khasi Hills had to be accommodated here due to lack of space.
