Crucial meet on ILP today

SHILLONG: At the scheduled meeting with pro-ILP pressure groups on Tuesday, the Meghalaya Government is looking forward to “meaningful and concrete suggestions,” which the pressure groups say they are ready with.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said on Monday that the pressure groups should come forward with meaningful and concrete suggestions to address the issue of influx and inflow of illegal immigrants in the crucial second round of dialogue. “I am happy that we had agreed to discuss the 52 existing laws to address the problem in the last meeting. I am looking forward to another fruitful meeting,” Sangma said.

Indicating that the deliberations to be held on Tuesday might not be a conclusive one to arrive at a resolution of the lingering problem, Sangma said the engagement would definitely provide an opportunity where some valuable suggestions would emerge.

“We need to come up with a lasting solution to address the issue. We must also not be in haste if we want to achieve our objective,” the Chief Minister said. He assured that the Government was ready to work with the pressure groups as one entity to check the problem of influx.

KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said that the pressure groups were ready with their suggestions which would be submitted to the State Government during Tuesday’s meeting.

“We are hopeful that the Government ) would give due weightage to the suggestion given by the 13 pro-ILP pressure groups in addressing the issue of influx. We would not want the Government to further delay in addressing this issue,” Jyrwa said.

Earlier, the pressure groups had indicated that they would be like first to listen to the State Government over the implementation of the ILP before presenting their views during the crucial second round meeting.
