Agartala: Based on the ground level feedbacks, Tripura government has sent a proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) suggesting specially designed barbed wire fencing for riverine and hilly terrain Indo-Bangla border, sources in the Home department confirmed here on Monday.
Of the total 833 km Indo-Bangla border sanctioned for erection of barbed wire fencing, around 80 percent international border has been fenced so far and works are in full swing to fence remaining part of the borderline.
Interestingly, the existing design of fencing has become virtually ineffective in riverine and hilly terrain areas, according to reports from ground level.
Based on the inputs, the state government has sent a proposal to the MHA seeking change in the existing design to make the barbed wire fencing more effective.
“Well, we have sent a proposal to the MHA suggesting specially designed barbed wire fencing for riverine and hilly terrain Indo-Bangla border to make it more effective. The government is awaiting a reply from the Centre”, said a top official of Home department.
The government has been focusing on erection of barbed wire fencing in the state’s eastern segment- from Kanchapur to Korbok via Ganganagar at the earliest as cross border movement of insurgents is taking place in spite tight vigil.
“The 200 km borer line starting from Kanchanpur to Korbok is still unfenced posing threat to the internal security. The construction agencies have been asked to complete the eastern frontier border as early as possible”, said the official.
BSF sources confirmed 694 km Indo-Bangla border has so far been completed while work is in progress along 101 km border line.
The entire Indo-Bangla border is expected to be completed by December, 2015 next.
Of the total 720 km Indo-Bangla sanction for flood lighting, a length measuring 577 km has been brought under flood lighting system while work is progress in 129 km international border. The project is expected to get completed by March, 2016.
An amount of Rs. 67.15 crore has been provided to Tripura State Electricity Corporation (TSECL) to erect transmission line along the Indo-Bangla border and out of which Rs. 47 crore has been spent so far, according to Home department sources.
