SHILLONG: The pending case to recover damages incurred during the ILP related agitations will continue despite the recent talks with the Government on matters related to implementation of ILP. The next hearing in this regard will be held on May 15.

On December 3 last year the Special Court headed by First Class Judicial Magistrate R Rymbai began the hearing on the damage suit of over Rs 31 crore to be recovered from 14 organizations for loss of property during the ILP-related agitations based on the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act and the Supreme Court order banning bandhs.

An official source said on Thursday that the Special Court will hear the case on May 15 and hoped that the concerned leaders of the pressure group will be present during the hearing.

There were a few hearings in the past by the Special Court, but many leaders of the pressure groups were not present during the hearings.

The Court had issued show-cause notices since November 3 last and subsequently sent reminders to the leaders of pressure groups.

Among the 14 pressure groups, only a few had already appeared before Court.

The State Government has now decided to issue notice through the newspapers to ensure that the leaders of the pressure groups appear before the Court.

The Government had filed the damage suit due to the loss of property, both private and public, following several cases of arson during the four-month-long agitation of the pressure groups demanding the implementation of ILP in the State.
