Consultative meeting on Tura water crisis

TURA: The district administration West Garo Hills, Tura held a consultative meeting to deliberate on the issue of acute water shortage that Tura and adjoining areas are facing due to delayed rains.
Participating at the consultative meeting South Tura MLA, John Leslee K Sangma felt that there is a need to have a committee in every locality to take care of the sources of water.
Earlier in his welcome address, Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi mentioned that pilferage of pipelines and lack of coordination between GHADC, PHE and MePDCL has aggravated the problem.
The issue of tampering with the distribution lines by GHADC and PHE is also a concern.
Various speakers stressed on the need to preserve and conserve the catchment areas.
A District Level Task Force was also constituted to look into the issues and institute course correction and strategy in water management.
The committee decided to visit Didagre and Boldorengre catchment areas on 24 and 31st May respectively to get first hand information about the water scenario.
According to Bakshi, the team would also visit some water sources and springs in and around Tura and try to get them under the possession of the Government so that it can take up different water supply schemes in Tura.
The meeting was attended by senior citizens, heads of line departments, members of different NGOs and Area Development Committees, representatives of church and religious bodies.
