SHILLONG: Miscreants, who reportedly looted Rs 71 lakh from SBI’s Umiam branch wee hours of Friday, also took away arms of the security personnel deployed in the bank along with the cash.

Informing this on Saturday, Ri-Bhoi oilice chief CV Reddy said that the miscreants took away a SBBL rifle, a double-barrel rifle and five rounds of ammunition.

“Police have got some clues that five to six people are involved in the crime,” Reddy said adding that no arrest was made so far.

He said that the SBI along with the MeECL were occupying the same Assam-type building.

According to him, miscreants managed to barge into the portion occupied by SBI by entering through the section occupied by the MeECL

“After entering, they managed to get into the strong room and then broke open the almirah, where the cash was kept, with a gas cutter,” he said adding that they managed to break open only one of locker which contained Rs 1.5 lakh.

The SP said that they failed to break the second locker which had a hefty amount of Rs 69.60 lakh.

“Some of the notes were partially damaged since the miscreants were attempting to break the locker with a gas gutter,” Reddy said.
