SHILLONG: In order to contain the frequency of accidents along the busy Shillong-Guwahati highway, the Ri-Bhoi Police has adopted a zero tolerance policy against those flouting traffic rules.

Concerned over rash driving which has become a common phenomenon along the route, police are going all out to penalize those involved in such acts of negligence.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, Ri Bhoi SP CVS Reddy said, “Earlier we used to collect around Rs 60000 to 70000 (as fine) per month but now it has shot up to around Rs 2- 3 lakh a month.”

Police are patrolling the entire highway, he added.

The SP said that he has also raised the matter of putting up road safety signboards with a corporate as such displays would create awareness among people about safety while driving.

The senior police official also expressed concern over the fact that use of safety belts is almost unheard of in this part of the world.

The statement of the SP assumes significance in view of the rise in the number of road accidents along the road.
