NONGPOH: After obtaining information under RTI Act on the functioning of chakki mills on Monday, the National Khasi Union (NKU) has conducted spot verification in Ri Bhoi district and found that under Khanapara and Byrnihat, three chakki mills were not functioning.
891 metric tons of wheat is provided to Ri Bhoi district and there are as many as 12 chakki mills in the district.
NKU Central body President Silvanus Mallai said that there were three ghost chakki mills owned by
M/S Lyngdoh, M/S Phanbuh and M/S Arowali which were not functioning. Moreover, the chakki mill representatives failed to part with information.
“This shows that there is corruption and diversion of wheat”, Mallai alleged .
The spot verification was following the end of 24 hour deadline given by the pressure group to Ribhoi Deputy Commissioner to conduct inspection of chakki mills.
The NKU President asserted that the Union will carry out checking of other areas of the district to unearth the existence of more ghost chakki mills.
