Cyclonic storm wreaks havoc in WKH

NONGPOH: In a cyclonic storm that occurred on Thursday afternoon in two villages in Ri Bhoi District, around 5 persons were injured. The incident which occurred at Sohpdok under Mawhati Constituency and at Nonglum village in Umroi Consituency affected 22 houses.

The injured persons who from the same family were identified as Magret Kurbah (30) and her two daughters Plilynti Kurbah (16) and Idaphisabet Kurbah (2) were immediately rushed to Umsning CHC for treatment.

As informed by the Sohpdok Rangbah Shnong Rocky Nongkhlaw, the strong cyclonic storm suddenly struck the village and affected around 22 houses that were totally destroyed.

He also informed that the village Dorbar authority had expressed their concern and condolence to the affected families and at the same time, the village authority urged the Mawhati Constituency representative, NGO’s and the government to lend their helping hand toward the affected families.

The leaders of the FKJGP, Umsning Circle under the leadership of its secretary Bines Kylla conducted the inspection to Sohpdok and also provided assistance to the affected villagers by donating 3 bags of rice. The RBYF central body though its Umsning Circle president and publicity secretary Central Body had informed that, the federation will inspect the affected villagers and also provide assistance by donating CGI sheets to the affected villagers.

Meanwhile, Ri Bhoi District Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Pooja Pandey after receiving the information about the cyclonic storm incident that affected two villages, had immediately directed the C&RD Block for conducting the inspection to the villages and also to inspect the affected villagers for necessary action and for providing the needful assistance.

Cyclonic storm victims of North Garo Hills demand compensation from Government

The victims of a cyclonic storm in North Garo Hills have demanded compensation from the government. The storm which lashed the region around 1:30 pm on Saturday last week affected villages under the Gokul GS Circle in North Garo Hills District like Aruakgre, Aruak Nokat, Kimdigre, Jamgonda Nokat and Chenggalma areas.

Informing about the difficulties being faced by the affected villagers the Secretary of Aruakgre Village Committee, Paul Marak said that many houses have been severely damaged with no aid coming from the government’s side so far.

“Immediately after the storm our people tried to contact the district administration over phone but were unsuccessful in their attempts. Later, we somehow managed to contact the Gram Sevak of Resubelpara Development Block who assured that he would come on Monday to take photographs. However, he never turned up on the day,” rued the village committee leader.

Marak said that it was the duty of the State Government to give assistance to the affected families in times of such calamities. He said that the State Government had access to sanctions of money meant for relief funds adding that the same should be handed over to the District Administration so that assistance can be provided to the affected families.

Meanwhile, the village committee leader has also appealed to the local MLA, Brigady N Marak to look into the grievances of the people saying that the people were depending on the elected representative for assistance.
