SHILLONG: Dejected at not being provided with land by the district administration of South West Khasi Hills, the ANVC-B on Friday offered to provide land for the proposed camp and asked the Government to take the offer if it was finding any to locate suitable land for the proposed designated camp in Khasi Hills.
In a statement issued here on Friday, ANVC-B leader Doang Shira asserted that the proposed land “will in no way belong to the Khasis”.
Stating that there are lakhs of Garos living in Khasi Hills who own Akhings under the name of Garo clans and are governed by the system of Garo Nokmaship, Shira said that the KHADC never accessed these areas and there was neither any development nor any facilities being provided to these areas.
“Nor are they successful in setting up any gates or collect taxes from these areas solely because the land belong to the Garos and therefore, not allowing us to have a camp in our birth places will violate our rights and deepen the wounds of negligence that we have borne through decades,” he said.
The ANVC-B also appealed to the KHNAM, HSPDP and KSU to consider the necessity of their demand.
“We want peace and we would appreciate if things do not get communal,” Shira said, adding, “Opposing our proposal will aggravate the situation in Khasi Hills.”
