Proposal submitted for inter state truck terminal
SHILLONG: The Transport department will soon float the tender for construction of the proposed Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Mawlai Mawiong.
At the moment, the government is awaiting administrative approval from the Finance department, Transport Minister HDR Lyngdoh said on Friday.
According to Lyngdoh, the North Eastern Council (NEC) has released Rs 4 crore out of the total Rs. 48.31 crore sanctioned for the project.
The construction of the proposed ISBT at Mawiong, which is being funded by the NEC, was approved by the Planning Commission in 2012. Once operational, the terminal would accommodate as many as 200 buses.
Earlier, the transfer of the site for the construction of the ISBT had hit hurdles owing to a dispute between the Thawmuid and Thangkhiew clans in relation to the possession of 60 acres of land.
The dispute was resolved in court and the ownership of the land was restored to the Thawmuid clan.
The Transport Minister also informed that a proposal has been submitted to the NEC for construction of an inter-state truck terminal (ISTT) along the Shillong-Guwahati highway.
“We have proposed that a total amount of Rs 26 crore be sanctioned for this project,” Lyngdoh said.
The proposed ISTT is expected to largely reduce the traffic congestion along NH 40 which is often hit by traffic snarls caused mostly by trucks plying along the route.
The Transport Minister informed that he would also conduct an inspection to select the suitable site for construction of the ISST.
The Government had earlier identified a land at Sumer for the project.
