East Bengal take a chance on Deepak Mondal

KOLKATA: Former India international and Arjuna awardee Deepak Mondal has signed for Kolkata giants East Bengal on a two-year contract, the club informed in a statement.

The veteran defender had earlier played for East Bengal from 2000-2004, and lifted three National Football League titles with the club.

After rejoining EB on Friday, Mondal stated that he had played the best football of his career with the club in his previous stint.

Apart from the NFL titles, Mondal, 34, has collected numerous awards and titles in his illustrious career. He won the Kolkata League four times, the IFA Shield twice, the Durand Cup twice, the McDowell Trophy Once, apart from winning the LG Asean Club Cup in 2003.

The defensive rock plied his trade for another Kolkata outfit – United SC – from August 2011. He guided the side to finishing tenth in the I-League season 2013/14.

Mondal has also played for East Bengal rivals Mohun Bagan between 2006 and 2011. (Agencies)
