SHILLONG: Residents of the city have of late complained about complete indifference on the part of those rendering the emergency services on more than one occasion.

The latest instance of alleged neglect came on Friday night when the MeECL helpline number (0364222222) was left unanswered when fear stricken residents of Jhalupara called up the number following a short circuit.

It is yet to be known if the helpline is a 24-hour service or it functions only during office hours.

The call, meanwhile, was attended to the next morning.

Residents of Jhalupara also recalled that when the huge fire erupted in the area a month ago, neither the fire service helpline (101) nor the police helpline (100) responded on time.

“It was only 108 ambulance service that responded to the call,” a resident said.

A number of fire incidents have been reported from across the city on account of strong winds which uprooted trees leading to short circuits.
