SHILLONG: The comp-letion of the 81-km Mairang-Ranigodown-Azra Road is still hanging fire with the construction of the major part of the stretch of the road still pending.
The foundation stone of the Rs 100 crore road project funded by the NEC was laid by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on May 2011 and the project was scheduled to be completed in May, 2013.
A group of journalists on Monday on a visit to the project site along with members of the Synjuk Samla Hima Nongkhlaw found that the construction from the 25th km till the 79th km, from Mairang to Umrit, was too slow. As per official assessment, the portion of the road would be completed only after two to three years.
As per official records, there are a total number of six contractors (AS Kharmawlong from Mairang, Monral Lyngdoh from Smit, Hidral War from Mairang, Nehlang Lyngdoh, Pelcy Snaitang from Mawiong, Brolding Nongsiej from Kynshi and Diwan B, Marak from Tura) who are implementing the construction of the stretch of the road which is still pending.
Out of the six contractors, only Mobral Lyngdoh has managed to complete 95 percent of the work.
While speaking to newsmen after the inspection, Synjuk Seng Samla Hima Nongkhlaw president Mac Donald Nongrang said that the Synjuk had inspected the site on may occasion and even met the PWD engineer since the majority of the people had complained about the pathetic condition of road.
“We would soon be meeting PWD Minister Sniawbhlang Dhar to request him for the early completion of the road,” Nongrang said.
