CMJ degree holders: Future imperfect

SHILLONG: The future of students and professionals, who obtained degrees from the CMJ University is bleak following the recent notice of closure of the University by the State Government.

With the State Government closing down the University, the degrees obtained from the controversial university by students as well as the professionals who are serving in various institutions have become null.

Various professions are working in parts of the country and abroad after obtaining degrees provided by CMJ University.

However, an official source said on Tuesday that though the State Government closed down CMJ University, the affected students and those who were appointed in various posts after obtaining the degrees of CMJ can still approach court for legal redress and get relief. Though there was a hearing by the education department with the students of CMJ University recently, the closure of the University resulted in the students not getting any relief.

One arrested: Meanwhile, the CID on Wednesday arrested one Afisa Nongrum, an employee of CMJ University who played a crucial role in preparing fake marksheets.

The arrest was made after Nongrum surrendered before police. “She had signed thousands of marksheets,” police said adding that she had been remanded in ten days of police custody by the CJM court.

Meanwhile, sources said that the police were on the look-out for a person by the name ‘Mishra’, who tried to create confusion among police personnel by providing misleading information.

Police sources said that it is suspected Mishra acted as a middleman for the University chancellor CM Jha.
