NONGPOH: The construction work for the proposed Central Agricultural University (CAU) at Kyrdemkulai seems to be in limbo at the moment with no initiative coming from the State Government in this regard.
Taking cognizance of the “inordinate delay” in the project, pressure groups and representatives from Umsning raised questions on Saturday over the reasons for non-commencement of the project, land acquired for which has been lying unused since 2010.
The meeting held at Umsning was attended by KSU North Khasi Hills president F Kharkamni, CORP central body working president, Bandari Ryntathiang, FKJGP North Khasi Hills president Eddie Kharbani, Umsning MDC Donkupar Sumer, Umsning Town Dorbar chairman Rocky Kylla and RBYF central body publicity secretary P.P Kylla.
The meeting expressed apprehension that due to the delay of commencement of construction of the university, the central government might allot the project to some other state.
“It will be matter of great shame to the state if the Central Government allots the CAU to some other state,” Kharbani told The Shillong Times adding that a delegation of NGO leaders will take up the matter with the government and urge for immediate commencement of construction of the proposed university.
The meeting felt that the construction of the university will be a boon for a section of the students from the State who would not need to travel outside the region for further studies once the CAU becomes functional.
They viewed that if the university is constructed at the earliest then it will be a boon to the students and will also help in providing suitable employment to the local people.
Meanwhile, the FKGJP president appealed to all the elected public representatives of the district to support them in their endeavour “for the betterment and welfare of the people of the state.”
