Guwahati: Putting up a brave front in the wake of severe set-back it has received at the hands of the BJP in the just concluded Lok Sabha polls, Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government gas decided to go ahead with its plan to celebrate the anniversary of the government which has completed three years of its third consecutive terms.
Assam government spokesman and power and industries minister Pradyut Bardoloi informed that the state council of ministers led by Tarun Gogoi had decided to go ahead with the plan to celebrate the completion of the third ‘successful’ year of the third consecutive Congress government in the state led by Tarun Gogoi.
According to the government spokesman, the Congress government in the state has decided to send two separate thanks-giving letter to the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh appreciating the immense support extended by them to the state government for facilitating all-encompassing development in the State.
The anniversary of the state government will be celebrated centrally in Guwahati most likely on June 1 next to highlight the achievements of the state government so far in respect of welfare of the common people and overall development of the State.
The council of ministers in the meeting refrained from making an analysis of the poor performance of the party in the just held Lok Sabha election though the issue was raised in the meeting.
The meeting also ignored the issue of demands within the Congress for ouster of Tarun Gogoi from the post of chief minister in the wake of dismal performance of the party in Lok Sabha polls. Three of the ministers, Dr Himanta Bishwa Sharma, Siddique Ahmed and Ajit Singh did not attend the meeting of the council of ministers.
Dr Sharma is believed to be trying to muster a revolt against Tarun Gogoi who, however, has denied to accept that there was any dissidence within the party and stated that Himnata Bishwa Sharma had rather expressed solidarity with him.
On May 16 when the poll results were coming, Tarun Gogoi had stated that he would submit his resignation before Sonia Gandhi taking responsibility of poor performance of the party in Assam. But that hasn’t materialized yet.
Ruling Congress won only three seats out of the total 14 seats in Assam compared to seven seats it had won in 2009 Lok Sabha polls. The party has been in power in Assam since 2001 without any break.
