SHILLONG: A Karbi insurgent group has again started extorting money from the Khasi population residing in Block II, Ri-Bhoi district.

As per reports, the members of Karbi People Liberation Tiger (KPLT) are openly demanding money even as threatening the Khasi people who refused to meet their demand.

When contacted, Rangbah Shnong of Umtlieh village, which is close to Mawlasnai and Sabuda near the Assam border, Precious Masharing on Tuesday admitted that the KPLT had been running an extortion racket in Block II.

He informed that he had received a call from the Area Commander of the outfit on Monday night demanding that each family of the village should pay Rs 2000 each to the outfit.

The Rangbah Shnong also informed that the Area Commander threatened that the outfit would not hesitate to kill those who refuse to pay money.

“This is not the first time that the local people have been threatened by the outfit,” Masharing said adding that he also already informed police of Mawlasnai about this threat issued by the militant group.
