Reckless driving on the rise

SHILLONG: There is a spurt in hit and run cases and reckless driving resulting in accidents in parts of the State. Police records are replete with several accident cases involving rash driving.

On May 19 at around 7.30 am, one motorcycle (ML-05G-9152) ridden by Phulmoon Kupar Nonglang with one female pillion rider dashed against another motorcycle (ML-05H-7509) at Fire Brigade, Laitumkhrah. As a result, the pillion rider sustained injuries and was shifted to Nazareth hospital.

On May 18 at around 9.45 pm, one star bus (ML-05K-7079) driven by Nongbah Kupar Kurkalang (35) fatally knocked down one Bas Kharkongor (30) at Mylliem Madan Iing Syiem in East Khasi Hills. Later, the bus driver surrendered himself at Laban police station.

On the night of May 18, one Maruti local taxi (ML-05E-3485) nearly knocked down armed branch constable, C. Mossahary at Polo. However, when the constable questioned the driver, the latter threatened him with dire consequences.

In another case, on May 18 at around 1.30 am, one oil tanker (ML-05F-8580) driven by Anup Baishya (27) capsized at Mawkhanu Shillong By-pass in East Khasi Hills. As a result, the driver sustained injuries and was removed to Shillong Civil Hospital.

Again on May 18 at around 6.50 pm, an accident took place at 7th Mile, Upper Shillong involving one truck (ML-05-6131) driven Thring Nongrum (38) and one Maruti local taxi (ML-04-7855) driven by Laurel Jyrwa (40). The driver of local taxi sustained injuries and was shifted to hospital.

On May 18 at around 8 pm, one Berlinstar Kharumnuid (21) fell down from a running truck at Sohryngkham in East Khasi Hills.

He sustained injuries and was shifted to hospital.

In a related case on May 15, Doithun Boro (18) handyman of a truck (AS-01EC-4054), fell down from the running truck at Wageasi in North Garo Hills and died on the spot.
