TURA: The Garo Graduates Union (GGU), Tura has expressed displeasure over the usage of a school in Tura for the storage of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) by the West Garo Hills District Administration in the recently concluded Parliamentary Elections. The Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School (GBHSS), Tura one the of the oldest schools in Garo Hills had been closed down since the beginning of the election process in April until counting day on May 16 depriving the students of regular classes.
The GGU in a statement issued here recently said that while it considered the General Election and its smooth completion as very important the important aspect of education of the students cannot also be ignored and overlooked who have been deprived of their regular classes for such a long period of time.
“While the government was giving much of the importance to education and the educational system in the state and insisting on maintaining the standards at par with the National level, depriving the students of their very right to education for no fault of theirs’ is not justified,” the General secretary of the GGU, B M Sangma said in a statement.
Pointing out that the absence of continuity of teaching in the classes at this peak time would be crucial to them and would adversely affect their studies and future careers the union appealed to the district Administration not to use or store election materials like EVMs in educational institution buildings for such a long period of time whenever any kind of elections are held in future.
