TURA: With the Lok Sabha elections over, the United Peace Movement for Garo Hills (UPMGH) has made an appeal to both the Meghalaya Government and the Centre to nominate at the earliest three facilitators so as to expedite the process of peace talks with militant outfits operating in the Garo Hills.
UPMGH had earlier too sought the nomination of the facilitators but the State Government had cited the ongoing election process for the delay.
“Now that elections are over and nominations have not been made, the movement feels that the early announcement would help to initiate the peace process early as the situation in the ground is turning from bad to worse,” said Rev. Fr. Januarius S Sangma, SDB, general secretary of the UPMGH.
UPMGH has decided to hold its general body meeting on June 7 in Tura to discuss the peace scenario in the Garo Hills and also to chalk out its future course of action. All affiliating organizations are being invited to participate in the meeting.
UPMGH has appealed to different organizations and common people to keep their focus on peace in the Garo Hills.
UPMGH has also expressed its heartfelt condolence to the family of Balsan Marak who died in judicial custody.
