Former Shillong Law college principal passes away

SHILLONG: Hasibuddin Ahmed, retired Principal of Shillong Law College and a senior Advocate of the Shillong Bar Association, passed away on Monday at NEIGRIHMS after a brief illness. He was a resident of Streamlet Road, Laban, Shillong.

Born on December 25, 1919 at Barpeta, Assam, late Hasibuddin is survived by his son and daughter besides leaving behind a host of relatives and grand children and admirers from different walks of life.

Son of Late Khan Bahadur Hafizuddin Ahmed, Late Ahmed served as the Headmaster in the Assamese ME School, Laban, Shillong from 1948-49. He was the founder member of the Shillong Vidyalaya, Bishnupur and was its first ever Headmaster in 1949.

Not to be undaunted with his contributions for spread of knowledge, Late Hasibuddin Ahmed joined as a lecturer in St Edmund’s College, Shillong in 1950 and served till 1952.

He took to legal profession and joined the Shillong Bar Association as a pleader in 1950 whose legal services to the State of Meghalaya was widely acclaimed by the State government as well as by the Central Government.

Hasibuddin Ahmed along with a few colleagues pioneered the establishment of the Shillong Law College in 1964. He was the recipient of the Bharat Jyoti Award for his untiring lifetime achievements and was honoured with the Certificate of Excellence by the International Friendship Society.

Late Hasibuddin’s Zanaza will be held on May 27 at the Lumparing Kabarasthan at 2 pm.

Meanwhile, the Shillong Bar Association in its emergent meeting has condoled the death of H Ahmed, Senior advocate who passed away at NEIGRIHMS.
