Youth killed when police opened fire at Singimari Chowk

Guwahati: A division bench of the Assam Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the District Magistrate, Kamrup to conduct and inquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of one Samin Barman and injuries caused to Dibakar Barman.

The AHRC division bench comprising its chairperson Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia and member Tarun Phookan vide its order dated May 26 in AHRC Case No 1053/9/14-15 asked the inquiry report to be submitted within 30 days.

The AHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports published on Monday about the killing of Samin Barman (22), son of Dandi Barman of Singimari Majarchupa under Hajo police station in Kamrup and injuries caused to Dibakar Barman due to police firing at the Singimari Chowk the day before.

One person was killed and another injured when police opened fire at a mob which pelted stones at them, protesting the death of a man in a road accident at Singimari area of Kamrup district, police sources said.

The same division bench also took suo motu cognisance of the reported death of a 5-year old child in Lakhimpur due to the alleged lack of any treatment at the Macchkhowa Bengenagorha Community Health Centre (CHC), as reported in a local daily yon Monday.

Taking note of the issue, the bench ordered the Commissioner and Secretary, Department of Health to conduct and inquiry into the incident through a committee consisting of both civil and medical officials of the state government and submit the report within 30 days. (PTI)
