JOWAI: The Dorbar Shnong of Chiehruphi, Wahiajer (Narpuh) and Thangskai have opposed the proposed public hearing for carrying out limestone mining by Meghalaya Cement Limited (MCL) under Topcem Cement, in 33.45 ha of land purchased by the company allegedly without the consent of the traditional bodies.

The three Dorbar Shnong under the banner of the Coordination Committee of Dorbar Shnong submitted a representation to the East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner demanding the cancellation of the proposed public hearing on June 17.

“The company never informed us about the proposed limestone mining. We have no knowledge about where the land is located and strongly suspect that it is within the residential areas,” the representation stated.

“We will not allow the public hearing unless the company agrees to do a joint inspection of the site,” the Coordination Committee said.
