The spate of cyber-crimes in the city is on the rise with numerous people especially females getting duped by unknown people who often lure young girls in the social networking website “Facebook”.

Police said that on May 21, a lady received an SMS from one Kelvin William of UK informing her that he would be sending a parcel for her and asked her to deposit Rs. 3 lakh.

The lady deposited the amount in different accounts, but till date she did not receive the parcel. A complaint in this regard has been filed at Laban Police Station.

As per police statistics, 20 cases of cyber-crimes were reported in the city in the year 2012 followed by 34 in 2013 and this year till February eight cases have been registered.

But despite police advisories, people particularly girls continue to be duped worth lakhs of rupees.

The most common way of duping people is though SMS and calls where people are informed that they have won a lottery amounting to lakhs and crores and people are asked to send back some amount.

Then people are also duped when they get calls by unknown callers and are asked to divulge their ATM details and pin by claiming that the ATM system is being overhauled and then huge amount of money is withdrawn from the victim’s account through internet banking.

There is one other way of duping people: from unidentified callers saying that a non-bailable case is registered against them in some part of the country and then the person is asked to pay for the lawyer’s fee.
