Shillong: In an era where youth are confined within four walls with up-to-date technology, Christ Senior Secondary School, Nongsder, pushed a new initiative to promote outdoor activities in Meghalaya through a first of its kind plan by constructing a swimming pool on the school campus.
The pool, which is 50 metres long and six feet deep, will be open for the students of different institutions in Shillong and Ri-Bhoi District.
The basic aim of creating the pool is to create an arena for water sports for the youth in the national and international arena.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Sports and Youths Affairs minister Zenith Sangma asserted that the young are often preoccupied with computers or video games.
“There is less participation by the youths in outdoor activities, which is very important in reuniting mind and soul,” Sangma said.
“Youth should utilise their talent as it has been given by the Almighty and it would be impropriate if someone does not use the talent.
“It is a great achievement for a school that was established seven years back. It is an achievement that a lot of infrastructure has been pushed to promote outdoor activities among students.”
Urging the students to exercise their full potential, Sangma said, “Only 20 percent of talent is being utilised by the youth and one needs to focus on a better tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, Dr George Kallingal, director of the school, said, “Any student abled or disabled is blessed with talent. Parents should understand the true meaning of education,” Kallingal said, adding, “The mantra should be ‘teach less-educate more’.”
