Kohima: Nagaland Governor Ashwani Kumar today emphasised the need to learn foreign languages so that students can get closer with that country.
Addressing as the Chief Guest the platinum jubilee of the Ura Academy, a literature development center of the Tenyidie language, a common tongue of ten Naga tribes of Nagaland and Manipur, at the NBCC Convention Center here, Dr Kumar said research had shown that multilingual children have better cognitive ability.
“Their scholastic achievements are far greater. Multilingual children are also academically more creative and socially more tolerant and acceptable,” he said.
To ensure that Naga children make their mark in the outside world, they should be taught not only their mother tongue but also English, Hindi and other foreign languages, he stressed.
He said the quality of education being imparted in many schools in Nagaland is a matter of concern for every parent and elder.
Hesaid that the efforts being put in by the management and staff of Ura Academy and Tenyimi tribes and the state government will be able to make progress in promoting the local language, culture, tradition and also spreading quality education, he observed.
The function was attended by among others Chief Minister T R Zeliang. (UNI)
