Study of power scenario in State

SHILLONG: The fact-finding team constituted by the State opposition parties to study the power scenario in the State will take some more time to come up with its final report.

“We would take some more time since we would require an in-depth study on the power scenario in the State before they come up with the final report,” chairman of the team and UDP legislator, Jemino Mawthoh, told newspersons following a detailed deliberation with MeECL officials in charge of power distribution at Lum Jingshai on Friday.

Mawthoh said that after collecting all the necessary information and data, the various opposition parties would again meet before commencing the exercise of compiling the reports.

“We are planning to visit Umiam Hydel Electricity Project Stage I and II in the first week of June,” the chairman informed.

Meanwhile, NPP legislator and member of the team, James K Sangma, informed that Friday’s meeting with MeECL officials was very satisfying.

“We were made to understand the various challenges faced by the MeECL. We also discussed the various dimensions relating to power distribution,” Sangma said.

Asked if the fact-finding team would try to rope in experts to seek their opinion on the issue, Sangma said they were already seeking advice and opinion from experts. “We would always involve the experts since they would be better equipped to analyze the power scenario in the State,” the NPP legislator said.

Earlier, the team had visited the Myntdu-Leshka Hydro Electric Project site in Jaintia Hills. Following the visit, Mawthoh had said that it was too early to make any comments or reach a conclusion on the functioning of the Project. “We will have to do an extensive study of all details of the project,” he had said.
