SHILLONG: No untoward incidents were reported on Sunday in Chokpot,South Garo Hills after the curfew was lifted for 12 hours in the area from 7 am to 7 pm.

Police and the district administration are keeping round the clock vigil to check any violent incidents following the custodial death of Witson Sangma on Wednesday last.

Following the incident, on Thursday a violent mob attacked the Chokpot police station and torched vehicles belonging to policemen. The administration immediately clamped curfew to prevent the escalation of violence.

An official source said that the night curfew will be relaxed only after analyzing the law and order situation.

There was protest from several quarters including several pressure groups following the second custodial death at a time when another custodial death was reported on May 20 in Tura, West Garo Hills.
