SHILLONG: At a time when frequent traffic jams have created havoc for the citizens, the Shillong Traffic Police has called for expansion of roads in the city.

Speaking to reporters, SP (Traffic) NK Syiem while expressing concern over the growing traffic jams said that the city roads in Shillong need to be widened for free vehicular traffic even as he added that roads in Shillong have been constructed without any concern for the safety of the pedestrians. “We are getting accident reports every day,” Syiem said.

The statement of the SP Traffic holds water in view of the fact that the number of vehicles in the city has grown tremendously over the years which is leading to an increase in the number of accidents.

He also informed that Mawlai traffic branch would be opened in few years time from now and this would help in reducing the traffic jams along the National Highway.

Reacting to a query about the reason of growing traffic jams, he said that this is an admission time and people take out their vehicles on the road even as he said that when it rains people in Shillong keep their two wheelers and bring out four wheelers which is one of the causes of traffic jams.

“Traffic comes to a standstill since all roads in Shillong are connected and jams often line up in other localities of the city as well,” he said.
