SHILLONG: Efforts to resolve the boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya were making “good progress,” Assam Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla said in Shillong on Monday after a meeting with his Meghalaya counterpart WMS Pariat.
Assam is often accused of encroaching into Meghalaya’s land.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Khosla said the progress was rapid but disputes could not be resolved overnight.
Both the Governments wanted to sit together to resolve these issues, he claimed. Both the states had mechanisms for dealing with boundary disputes.
“Both the states have nodal officers to deal with the border issues,” he said. These nodal officers of the two states met regularly to discuss the issues.
Besides the border dispute, issues relating to the joint cadre of officers that the two states were sharing were also discussed. Officers from Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service and Indian Forest Service were shared between the two states, Khosla said.
The meeting discussed about the career progression of the officers from one level to other and their promotion. “We do it in a manner where there is some kind of balance and parity between Assam and Meghalaya.” the Assam Chief Secretary told reporters. Officers from Assam Police, the administration and also officials from the Forest Department attended the meeting.
