SHILLONG: In preparation for the World Environment Day to be celebrated on June 5, the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) along with the Forest Department, Government of Meghalaya has been conducting several thematic activities across the city to highlight and sensitize the public about the World Environment Day.
The first of such events was a seminar focused on environmental degradation held at Brookside Adventist School where the resource persons were A Suting and B Lyngdoh.
The seminar was highly interactive and children were given the opportunity to air out their grievances over environmental issues. A few short documentaries were shown to the students in order to provide a punchier message about the perils of human want and destruction.
Several of the students were of the opinion that polythene bags must be used with care, as one student put it, “We must be honest to help the environment. We will always need plastic bags because they are more efficient but we must recycle them.” A large portion of the student community was very strong in their opinion of using public transport to reduce carbon emission.
After the conclusion of the seminar, the “Eco-based Competition” was held. Children showcased their models depicting environmental degradation and human activities that were depleting the ozone layer. The entire participants were invited to display their models at the State Convention Centre on the 5th of June, World Environment Day.
A second seminar was also held at Church of God School, Mawlai later in the afternoon.
