CM for effective justice delivery system

NONGSTOIN: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has emphasized on the importance of complete separation of judiciary from executive to make justice delivery system effective.

“It is the responsibility of the government to ensure that the provision, as enshrined in the Constitution of the country, is fulfilled,” Sangma said while addressing the foundation stone laying ceremony of District and Sessions Judge Court (West Khasi Hills district) here on Tuesday.

Further, the Chief Minister said the District and Sessions Judge Court, would be able to accelerate legal proceedings thereby delivering prompt justice and at the same time help the understaffed Police department who are weighed down with their duties in solving cases, investigation and maintaining law and order.

He also assured that the government would equip the court with the necessary infrastructure.

He urged the youth to take up legal studies as one of the options so that they could contribute towards effective legal system and get an opportunity to serve people.

“I appeal to the Bar to make Legal support more affordable to the common man,” Sangma said.

Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, Justice P C Pant said the separation of judiciary from executive was a step towards fulfilling the constitutional mandate and building confidence among people.

He said this would facilitate the speedy delivery of justice without unnecessary delay in the process.

Echoing a similar view, Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh in his speech said that the separation of judiciary from executive was a relief to the executives as they could now function more effectively.

Of the 11 districts in the state, at least two more districts are yet to have a fully functional separate court.
