One drowns in Byrnihat

NONGPOH: In a tragic incident, a middle-aged man met his watery grave at Byrnihat River on Wednesday afternoon at around 12.30 pm.

According to the police, the incident occurred when the victim identified as Halnin Bareh (50), a resident of Nongtalang, War Jaintia, was crossing the river on an old wooden log and the log capsized. The victim drowned as he did not know how to swim.

On receiving information of the incident, police personnel of Byrnihat outpost and the Meghalaya Fire Service rushed to the spot but only managed to fish out the body at around 8:30 pm.
