TURA: The Catholic church in Garo Hills condemned the cold blooded murder of a 35 year old mother of four children by suspected GNLA militants in Raja Ronggat village of Chokpot.
“Such a brutal and shocking act of violence on the helpless is not tolerated by any civil society,” stated the Tura diocese.
At a time when the church is working with other like-minded individuals and organizations towards a lasting peace, such mindless acts have set the clock back. These escalating acts of violence in Garo Hills be it the custodial deaths, lynchings, kidnappings, extortions, devil worship and the more recent one of an execution of a woman by militants are a matter of grave concern, felt the church.
Taking a dig at the lackadaisical attitude of the state government and its enforcement agencies the church appealed to the powers that be to provide adequate compensation to the victim’s family as a necessary pre-requisite and to take matters in right earnest to bring about peace to the green hills.
NGOs working for the betterment of Garo Hills ought to act in a non-partisan manner and with restraint while dealing with such contentious issues, advised the church.
